. He and Kenneth Branaugh are the best Shakespearean actors on the planet, if you want this former theatre major's opinion. I'd so dig hanging out with Sir Ian for coffee or just some chit-chat. Keep the flag flying Gaydalf!! Shakespeare~The Green Man has Spoken~

I agree that he is a wonderful actor! In Harry Potter, he is playing Albus Dumbledore (who is my favorite caracter in the books and films) who also is gay, according to JK Rowling!
……. emma E ~ I have just got to correct your assertion that McKellen plays the grandfatherly wizard Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films. He does not. Initially it was actor Richard Harris who portrayed him 'til his untimely death, whereafter it was Michael Gambon who finished playing him 'til the end of the films.
Granted, Green Man, Ian McKellen is a stellar Shakespearean talent. If you've not seen it yet, do add Gods & Monsters to all your Netflix™ queues. It's the biographical account of the largely closetted gay film director, James Whale, responsible for many classics including Frankenstein, but the film concentrates mostly on Whale's final years & his struggle with dementia from the lingering affect of a stroke. Happy viewing everyone ~ (•8-D
……. my turn to make an error … I meant "largely UN-closetted gay film director, James Whale"
@Emma...He's WOULD be a good Dumbledore, but for me, he'll always be Gandalf.
@Anadae...
My favorite of the two Dumbledore actors is by far Michael Gambon. I have indeed seen Gods and Monsters before and found it be excellent. But that reminds me, I need to watch it again. It's been awhile.
